Every BODY is Different: Working with Clients Who Have Special Requirements

At Healing Souls, we believe that therapeutic care is for everyone. Not just the people who fit neatly into a standard session template, but everyone. That includes clients living with physical differences, mobility challenges, prosthetics, chronic conditions, and anything else that makes their body uniquely their own.

Last week reminded us of exactly why that matters.

When the Session Looks Different from the Start

We recently had the privilege of working with a client who is an amputee. Before we even got to the table, it was clear this session would require a different kind of attention. Not necessarily more work, but different work. More listening. More observation. More willingness to set aside assumptions about how a body should move and meet this person exactly where they were.

Amputation changes everything about how a body distributes weight and manages posture. When a limb is absent, the surrounding muscles, joints, and connective tissue compensate. They have to. The spine shifts. The shoulders adjust. The hips may tilt to find a new center of gravity. Over time, these compensations become the new normal for that person, but they also become a source of chronic tension, imbalance, and discomfort that standard massage approaches were never designed to address.

Adjusting the Approach

The first thing we did was slow down and ask questions. Where are you holding tension? What positions feel stable and which ones feel vulnerable? What has your body been working hardest to manage lately?

From there, the session became a collaboration. We adjusted positioning to account for the client's natural center of gravity rather than trying to place them in a standard position that would have felt uncomfortable or unstable. We paid close attention to the areas that were working overtime to compensate for the missing limb, particularly the lower back, the opposite hip, and the shoulder girdle, and focused therapeutic attention there.

We also worked with the residual limb itself, gently and with full communication throughout. Many amputees experience tension, sensitivity, or phantom sensations in and around the residual limb. Treating it with the same care and respect as any other part of the body is not just good technique. It is part of making the client feel seen and whole.

What This Kind of Work Actually Requires

Working with clients who have special requirements is not about having a special certification for every possible condition. It is about having a strong foundation in how the body works, genuine curiosity about this particular person's experience, and the willingness to adapt in real time.

It requires setting aside the session plan you walked in with and building a new one on the spot based on what the client is telling you verbally and what their body is telling you through tissue quality, movement patterns, and response to touch.

It requires humility. You are not the expert on this person's body. They are. Your job is to bring your skills to meet their knowledge of themselves.

And it requires communication throughout, not just at intake. Checking in regularly, adjusting pressure and positioning as the session unfolds, and creating an environment where the client feels safe enough to tell you when something is not working.

Why It Matters

People with physical differences, disabilities, or complex medical histories often avoid massage therapy because they do not know if it is safe for them, or because they have had experiences in the past where a therapist was not sure how to work with them, and it showed.

That is a gap we take seriously at Healing Souls. Every client who walks through our door deserves a session designed for them, not a modified version of one designed for someone else.

If you or someone you love has special requirements and has wondered whether therapeutic massage, Bowen therapy, Reiki, or lymphatic drainage might be right for you, reach out and talk to us first. We will be honest with you about what we can offer and how we can make it work.

Every BODY deserves care. We mean that literally.
